4 Desert Landscaping Tips in Las Vegas

You finally did it! First, you learned what it took to get a mortgage, then you saved up and bought that house. Everything seems fine, but there are still some tasks that need your attention. One of the tasks happens to be keeping your front and backyard maintained. At first, it’s a lot of work to keep both yards well-maintained. Luckily, desert landscaping exists.

When it comes to keeping your yard maintained in Nevada, desert landscaping is super helpful. As we mentioned in our Desert Gardening Guide, the soil and water situation makes it hard to keep grass, plants, and trees alive. Using desert landscaping will save you time and money.

Rocks

Desert Landscaping - Rocks

Take a look at Las Vegas. Rocks are everywhere. Where ever grass can go, you’ll most likely find rocks instead of grass. You need to water the grass to keep it healthy. With rocks, you don’t need to water it. All you have to do is place the rocks where you want them.

Of course, rocks can look plain. If you want to spice it up, you can have different colors and types of rocks in your yard. Furthermore, you can choose to mix the rocks with a few plants and trees or add decorative items.

Artificial Grass

You might have fond memories of playing in the grass. The thought of having rocks doesn’t seem appealing at all. On the other hand, you want to make your yard low maintenance. Artificial grass might be the perfect option. It will still look like grass. Although It doesn’t feel exactly like grass, it’ll be softer than the rocks and dirt. Also, you won’t have to do anything to keep artificial grass looking good.

If you want some variety for your yard, you can still add some rocks. For instance, you can have a section of your yard filled with artificial grass while the other one has rocks. Furthermore, you can place some plants and trees to make the yard wonderful.

Desert-Proof Plants

When you think about plants in the desert, what comes to mind? Cacti probably came to mind. Cacti are perfect plants for the desert landscaping because you won’t have to water it often, and it can handle the Las Vegas sun. Plus, cacti can come in different colors and sizes. But, what if you don’t want any cacti in your yard? No worries because there are other plants and trees that do fine in the desert.

One of the most important requirements for desert-proof plants is little need for water. Agaves fit the bill since they don’t need a lot of water and are very low maintenance. If you want flowers,  wallflowers, oleander, and portulaca require very little water.

Decorative Items

Another way to make your yard low-maintenance is adding items that will complement your yard. For some, this would be adding a fountain, birdhouse, or small sculpture. The Item might be the only extra thing you need since it functions as a centerpiece. You might want to buy a set of items that will make your yard look better.

If you want to save money and you want to build something, you can turn this into a DIY project. There are some many tutorials out there.
